🌍 LATE BREAKING — Saharan Dust Heading Our Way

A plume of Saharan dust is currently crossing the Atlantic and expected to reach Southwest Florida next week. The same African desert that spawns our hurricanes is also sending a natural suppressor — dry air that can temporarily slow tropical storm development. Expect hazy skies and potentially stunning sunsets in the days ahead. Full story in Issue Two.

Welcome to the first issue of Riverview Weekly Compass. I’m Mike Green, your neighbor in Riverview. I started this newsletter because people who live here deserve a calm, practical guide to navigating life in southern Hillsborough County - the weather, the food, the community, and yes, even hurricane season. I’m not an expert. I’m just someone who pays attention and wants to share what I find. Let’s discover this together.

🌀 HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE — June 1, 2026

Hurricane season officially begins today. If you are new to Florida this is not a reason to panic — but it is absolutely a reason to prepare now, before a storm is named.

Here is something most people don't know: every hurricane that threatens Florida begins its life as a cluster of thunderstorms off the west coast of Africa — nearly 5,000 miles away. It then travels across the Atlantic for one to three weeks, gathering strength over warm ocean water before arriving at our doorstep.

The storm itself is rarely the hardest part. It is what comes after — days without power, flooded roads, no cell service — that catches people off guard.

Your starter checklist:

  • 7 days of water — one gallon per person per day

  • Flashlights and extra batteries

  • Non-perishable food for 5 to 7 days

  • Prescription medications filled

  • Know your evacuation zone at HillsboroughCounty.org

💧 WHAT'S REALLY IN YOUR WATER BOTTLE?

Standing in the water aisle at Sprouts recently I counted over 30 different products. Spring water, alkaline water, electrolyte water, sparkling water — what does any of it actually mean? Here is the plain English breakdown.

Spring water — comes from a natural underground source and contains natural minerals. Brands like Gerolsteiner and Mountain Valley are good examples.

Alkaline water — purified water with an adjusted pH. Brands like Essentia add electrolytes back in. The health claims are often bigger than the science supports.

Sparkling water — carbonated water for people looking to replace soda. LaCroix has subtle flavor, Waterloo is bolder, and Spindrift uses real fruit juice.

Bottom line for Florida summers — the best water is the one you will actually drink. Stay hydrated. The heat here is no joke.

🤖 AI FOR EVERYDAY LIFE — What Is It and Why Should You Care?

You have probably heard a lot about artificial intelligence lately. Maybe it sounds complicated or intimidating. I felt the same way. Then I tried it.

I used AI to help me research and organize this very newsletter. I described what I wanted and it helped me put my thoughts together, find information, and get words on the page. Think of it less like a robot and more like a very patient assistant who never gets tired of your questions.

Starting next issue I will walk you through simple practical ways to use AI in your everyday life. No tech background required. We will discover it together.

🌴 LOCAL SPOTLIGHT — Island Flame Grill

"Fire and spice makes everything nice."

One of the things I love most about living in Riverview is discovering the incredible diversity of food right in our own backyard. Island Flame Grill on US-301 is a perfect example of what makes this community special.

This local barbecue and soul food business blends Caribbean flavors with Southern cooking traditions — creating something that feels completely unique to this corner of Florida. Their Soul Food Sunday offerings have built a loyal following among residents who know where to find the real hidden gems. Currently only open on Sunday at noon.

This is not just a restaurant recommendation. It is a reminder that Riverview is becoming one of the most culturally rich communities in the entire Tampa Bay area. Every food truck and local restaurant tells a story about who we are and who we are becoming.

If you have not tried Island Flame Grill yet — make it your mission this week. Tell them your neighbor Mike sent you.

🔭 COMING IN ISSUE TWO

Next issue we are going to go deeper on something every southern Hillsborough County resident needs to understand — Tampa Bay storm surge.

When a hurricane approaches from the Gulf of Mexico the unique shape of Tampa Bay can funnel water inland in ways that amplify flooding far beyond what the storm itself would suggest. We will map exactly how that works, what it means for your specific neighborhood, and what you need to know before a storm ever gets close.

We will also dive deeper into Florida's drinking water — where it comes from, how it is treated, and what is actually coming out of your tap.

Plus our full water bottle breakdown continues — spring versus alkaline versus sparkling — everything you need to know to make smart choices at the store.

Thank you for reading the first issue of Riverview Weekly Compass. If you found this useful please share it with a neighbor. That is how we grow this community together.
